Generation Two2. JOHN2 P. WATSON (Robert1); born 29 November 1812 near Pleasantville, Pennsylvania; died 23 September 1894 in Sadsbury Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; buried in South Side (also called the Foust) Cemetery, Shermanville, Sadsbury Township Crawford County, Pennsylvania; married (first), 18 April 1833, MARY M. LUCE; born circa 1801 in Pennsylvania, died 30 October 1850; married (second) MARGARET WATSON,11 born circa 1826.12 This Margaret Watson was possibly a sister of John, Francis, and William Watson of Forest County, Pennsylvania. I am not aware of a definite relationship between these Forest County Watsons and our Watsons, although Watson workers suspect a relationship does exist. In 1850, John, and first wife Mary and family were in Allegheny Township, Venango County.13 In 1860, John, and second wife Margaret and family were still in Allegheny Township.14 By 1880, John and children Benjamin, Philena and Elmer had moved to Sadsbury Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; apparently by this time, John's second wife Margaret had died.15 John was a farmer and lumberman. Abstract of John P. Watson's obituary in Crawford Journal, 4 October 1894:16
3. JAMES2 W. WATSON (Robert1), born 29 June 1815; died 9 March 1887 in Evansburg, Conneaut Township [present-day Conneaut Lake, Sadsbury Township], Crawford County, Pennsylvania; buried in Foust Cemetery, Shermanville, Sadsbury Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; married (first), 3 January 1843, SUSANNAH MCCONNELL, born 30 September 1821; died 3 January 1862; married (second) MARTHA MCCONNELL, born 10 October 1823; died 24 October 1894.20 She was a sister of James’s first wife, Susannah (McConnell) Watson; another sister was Polly McConnell. The McConnell sisters’ father was John McConnell, born 1781, died 1855.21 James Watson was a lay minister. The family lived mainly in Sadsbury Township, Crawford County. In 1850 and 1860 the family was in Allegheny Township, Venango County.22 ![]()

From left: Margaret Ellen (Watson) Ellis (1850-1917), John Watson (1849-1929), Martha Adelia (Watson) Tripp (1847-1923), Robert M. Watson (1845-1907), and Sarah Jane (Watson) Ash (1843-1933). Date not known, probably a composite. From Heinen (1992), page 230, with permission. 4. WILLIAM2 BROADFOOT WATSON (Robert1), born circa 1820; died after 1880; married 24 January 1839 ELIZABETH ANN HOLMDEN, born 23 February 181924 in England; died 2 February 1894. The family eventually lived in the Tidioute, Deerfield Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, area.25 Elizabeth Ann Holmden was a daughter of Walter and Sarah (Terry) Holmden.26 Walter’s sons owned land in what was to become Pithole City during the oil excitement of 1865. In 1842, William Broadfoot Watson purchased 50 acres of land in Allegheny Township, Venango County, from his uncle William Broadfoot (probably William Broadfoot Watson was named after him) for $200.27 The land was part of Tract 83 of the Holland Land Company. William Broadfoot (born circa 1777; died 6 May 1846) was the husband of Sarah Henderson, see #4 of Henderson web site. Venango County Deed Book L, page 147 instituted 23 June 1845, recorded 12 September 1848:
5. ROBERT2 PERRY WATSON (Robert1), born 1821; died 31 August 1869; married MARTHA HENDERSON,29 born 13 March 1820; died “of old age” 28 August 1898 in Titusville, where she had been a residence for 30 years; buried in Henderson Cemetery, Southwest Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania.30 In 1850, Robert, Martha and family were living in Deerfield Township, Warren County.31 Robert was a teamster. Martha Henderson was a daughter of Richard and Violet (Hunter) Henderson—see #14 of “Hendersons.” Richard’s sister Margaret Henderson married Robert W. Watson; hence the Robert Perry Watson–Martha Henderson marriage was a first cousin marriage. Robert and Martha lived in the Jerusalem Corners (near Pleasantville) area, Allegheny Township (now Oil Creek Township), Venango County. Venango County Deed Book L, page 184, instituted 4 November 1848, recorded 14 December 1848:
6. JOSEPH2 M. WATSON (Robert1), born circa 1823; married MARY JANE COURSON, born circa 182036 in Pennsylvania. Mary Jane Courson was an heir, probably a daughter, of John Courson of Allegheny Township, Venango County, as indicated in an 1848 quit claim to William T. Neill. Other heirs of John Courson were Enoch Courson, David Courson, and Deborah Courson.37 In 1850 and 1860, Joseph and family were enumerated in Allegheny Township,38 where Joseph was listed as a farmer. In 1864 an Allison Pierce and his wife Mary sold land in Allegheny Township, Venango County, to Joseph and wife Mary.39 In 1865, the family was still living in Allegheny Township, Venango County;40 when Joseph and Mary Jane along with Samuel and Sarah A. (Fleming) Shreve (see #9 of the Fleming web site), sold land in Allegheny Township to an Alman Barry (or Harry) for $17,000. By 1872, Joseph and Mary Jane were in Ashtabula County, Ohio.41 Joseph (and Mary Jane) were not mentioned in the important quit claim deed, Deed Book RR, page 387. However they were mentioned in an 1845 quit claim: Venango County Deed L, page 172, instituted 1 November 1845, recorded 29 November 1848:
There is a Venango County, Pennsylvania, Orphans Court document,42 pertaining to Joseph buying land from Pliny Sheldon (Elizabeth Lytle’s husband, see #20 of the Lytle web site), who died before the total amount was paid; that is, three dollars was still owed. Joseph indicated he was willing to pay this amount upon assurance he would receive the title from the administrators of Pliny’s estate, John McCasland and James Siggins. This was so ordered by the Court.
7. ZACHARIAH2 HATTON WATSON (Robert1), born circa 1826; died circa 1874; married SINIA (or CENA) DUSTIN WATSON, born 14 June 1826 in Pennsylvania; died 6 February 1917; buried in Jerusalem Corners Cemetery, Oil Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.45 The family lived first in the Pleasantville area, Venango County, and eventually moved to Sadsbury Township, Crawford County.46 Zachariah was a farmer. In 1864, Zachariah and Sinia D. Watson sold land in Pleasantville to James S. Conley for $50.47 By 1880, Zachariah had died and Sinia, widow, was listed as head of household in Sadsbury Township.48 Sinia’s parents were William V. and Nancy Gates (Hunter) Watson. These are Forest County and Crawford County Watsons who are probably related to our Watsons, although not yet proven. Sinia’s grandparents were David and Mary (Gates) Hunter of Tionesta Township, Forest County. David was a son of Poland and Jane (Simpson) Hunter—see #20 of the "Hunters" in the Henderson web site. David Hunter had a sister, Margaret Hunter, who married Annanias (Americus?) Dustin, and this probably accounts for the source of Sinia’s middle name, Dustin. Also, Throop (1987), pages 133–134, mentions a Venango County deed: “In the 3 October 1850 book, P, page 246, David Hunter and wife Mary Hunter of Tionesta Township, sold to William Watson and Annanius [Americus?] Duston, also of Tionesta Township, one hundred acres and eighty–five perches in Tionesta Township, part of a larger trace of land granted to David Hunter in 1836 from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” Also, an Ananial Duston, along with Andrew Fleming (#16 of “Flemings”) (son of Daniel Fleming) were witnesses to the will (written April 1862) of Sinia’s grandfather, David Hunter. There is an orphans court document49 pertaining to the estate of Poland Hunter that gives even another spelling of the given name of the above mentioned Dustin: Ananias. In 1845, Margaret Watson, widow of Robert W. Watson, petitioned for the appointment of a guardian for her minor daughter, Susan Jane, under the age of 14. Zachariah Watson, a minor over the age of 14, also petitioned for the appointment of a guardian.50 Margaret Watson was appointed guardian for Susan Jane, and Daniel McCasland was appointed guardian for Zachariah. This Daniel McCasland; died 1853, married Jane Lovell; he was a son of James McCasland, born 1781. Venango County Deed Book HH, page 397, written 20 July 1852, recorded 25 January 1865:
8. SUSAN2 JANE WATSON (Robert1), (my great grandmother) born 1836, probably in Oil Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania (there is also an Oil Creek Township in Crawford County); died 22 February 1899 in Oil Creek Township; buried in Fairview Cemetery, Pleasantville, Oil Creek Township, Pennsylvania; married 30 June 1853 JAMES LYTLE, born 18 September 1830 in present–day Oil Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania; died 15 August 1922 on the Fleming Farm, Shamburg area, Oil Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania; buried in Fairview Cemetery, Pleasantville, Pennsylvania. James Lytle was a son of John and Sarah (Morrison) Lytle—see #2 of the Morrison web site. Children of James and Susan (Watson) Lytle were (1) Anna Lytle (Wood); (2) Robert Lytle; (3) Margaret Lytle (Glass, Doyen); (4) James Manford Lytle; (5) David Anderson Lytle; (6) Marion John Lytle; (7) William Anson Lytle; (8) Josephine Louise Lytle (Fleming); (9) George Alfred Lytle; (1) Mary J. Lytle; and (11) Susan Grace Lytle. See #21 of the Lytle web site. for Susan (Watson) Lytle's photograph, sources and descendants of James and Susan (Watson) Lytle. |
